“Listen to The Country” was a title and idea that Angus had been carrying around for about 10 years.
“I saw it written on a plaque at the base of Uluru while I was on a holiday with my family and it’s stuck with me ever since”, says Gill.
“The song sprang from the frustration and distress at the unfathomable inaction in Australian on Climate Change. Its relevant today, yet echoes what Indigenous Australians have been practicing and saying forever – listen to the country, care for it, and it will take care of you”.
“With the melange of extreme weather events our country has experienced over the last few years, I think it’s time to listen to the country because its telling you the truth”, says Gill.
It’s not the first time that Angus Gill and Kevin Bennett have collaborated on such a powerful anthem. About 7 years ago they wrote and recorded “Staring Out the Back of A Car” – a song that highlights the heartbreak of the Stolen Generation.
The pair assembled the best musicians from Australia to play on “Listen to The Country” – Glenn Wilson on drums/percussion, Jeff McCormack – Bass, Stuie French and Colin Watson on acoustic guitars, Michael Muchow on electric guitar, Jeff Taylor – Piano, Tim Crouch on mandolin, cello and fiddle, Lawrie Minson on Harmonica and Michel Rose providing his signature Pedal Steel.
The song throws to a pulsating Midnight Oil vibe that stirs the heart invoking immediate action.
Kevin Bennett perfectly sums up “Listen to The Country” – “I think it’s a song for the times … for all time”.
“Listen to The Country” is out now via Rivershack Records.
