As with the first two, well received singles by the collective, this one has yet another diverse lineup featuring some of Australia’s best country session musicians. The musician lineup on this track is Glenn Wilson (drums), Mitch Cairns (bass), Clayton Doley (piano), Michael Muchow (electric guitars), Jy-Perry Banks (pedal steel), Sarah Humphreys (harmony vocals) and Carpenter (acoustic guitars, Hammond organ, additional harmonies). It was recorded and mixed (in stereo and Dolby Atmos) by Carpenter at The House Studio in Sydney, with the musician’s contributions recorded in their own personal studios.
The track is a further stylistic shift for the evolving project. Moving ever so slightly away from ‘typical country’, the wistful but sonically rich track shows elements of folk and indie pop, while maintaining enough of its country/alt.country style to satisfy fans of the first two singles. With Humphreys’ evocative harmonies reinforcing the gentle melody, and the interweaving of the chiming guitars, delicate piano and soaring steel over the restrained but evocative rhythm section, the track is a perfect illustration of the skills these players have in creating parts and sonic soundscapes that perfectly punctuate the feel of the track.
Written by Carpenter, the song is written as an observation on the qualities and impact a few key people have on his life. As Carpenter says “Caroline isn’t one person. She is an imagined figure containing qualities of several people very close to me, and perhaps even a little of myself.” The track shows the experienced writer, with several hundred compositions under his belt, continuing to refine his art and push the styles and techniques he uses to write songs.
Recording continues on what will be the debut album for the collective, due mid 2024. In the meantime, Carpenter is prepping the next single for his 5 times Golden Guitar nominated “other project”, with the Banks Brothers, to be released in the last quarter of 2023.
