Ever wondered what happens when an Australian rock legend and a Golden Guitar winner get together, bonded by the passion for the dark art and craft of songwriting?
Eric McCusker is a founding member, lead guitarist and songwriter of Mondo Rock. He’s the man behind some of Australia’s most recognisable hits, such as: 'Come Said The Boy', 'State of the Heart', 'Summer of 81', 'Chemistry' and many more.
Angus Gill is the youngest Australian male solo artist to perform on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. He has released 5 ARIA chart topping albums, garnered 13 #1s and 11 Top 10 singles on Australian country radio. McCusker and Gill were connected via Gill’s publisher Philip Mortlock (of Origin Music Publishing). They quickly realised they both shared a meticulous, attention to detail approach to songwriting, and a love for great songs throughout the ages. 'Can You Imagine' was the first of four songs written by McCusker & Gill, which will be released on an EP project later this year. The pair are joined by legendary musicians, including the world’s most recorded session guitar player Dean Parks (Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand), Gary Novak (Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé), Andrew Ford (Sting, Whitney Houston) and James Raymond (David Crosby, Michael McDonald). 'Can You Imagine' is out to radio now. The first taste of the McCusker Gill collaboration, lifted from Gill’s forthcoming compilation album 'The Songwriter…So Far', out on Friday 23rd February. Gill says about the writing process, “Eric mentioned the title Can You Imagine and I instantly thought, empathy. The title inadvertently makes you consider someone else’s perspective or situation. We then got talking about my recording studio being flooded in the 2021 floods and the song came together over the course of 3 or 4 sessions.” Eric says, "Once we had the title and the idea and fresh images in mind from Angus' experience at home in Port Macquarie, the song seemed to fall into place naturally. There seem to be a lot of floods lately! We do need to imagine these things, for compassion and...prediction! We went a little biblical in the language, it seemed appropriate."
