Forenzics "EUROPE SPEAKS"

24/3/2022

“Europe Speaks”
the new featured song from the Forenzics album
Shades and Echoes

The next featured track from the Forenzics album Shades and Echoes is the brooding and evocative Europe Speaks.

As friend and actor (and now Forenzics fan) Sam Neill stated in his recent highly complementary Instagram post, “try ‘Europe Speaks' for something very current”.

The song has an elusive yet highly charged atmosphere, with some of the lyrics quoting European poetry, while others seem to be coming from Finn’s memories of growing up in NZ and being taught more about Europe than his own country. The images returning in new shapes and forms within the expansive soundscape.
“And the bare black cliffs clanged round him” - Tennyson.

“We feel at ease in the middle of a storm, but when the sea is calm and the sun is warm, then we all find in the unmoving air, is our despair, our despair” - Baudelaire.

Tim Finn has also turned to the WW2 diaries of his father Richard Finn to include these words...
”I saw some of the country our barrage had passed over. Through the dismal fog I saw the shell torn ground. Shattered tree trunks, ruined houses, unburied corpses, a picture of desolation I can’t easily forget.”
To accompany the release of Europe Speaks a video has been created in keeping with the noir black and white, look and feel, of the Forenzics Shades and Echoes project. Eddie’s father’s WW2 flight log is included in the imagery.
“Living in this part of the world” says Tim “you can’t help wondering what is this concept called ‘Europe’? The more it fractures and splinters the less easy it is to grasp it. Tens of millions have died there, including many young New Zealanders and Australians.
It’s in our poems, songs, paintings and sculpture. It’s in our fathers’ war diaries. We are haunted by it in some strange way. However this song is mainly inspired by the beautiful and sad music that Eddie sent me.
When we finished it, Eddie said to me, “Tim, what have we created?” We both knew it was something called up from a deep dark place.”
