Vanessa Fernandez is a Melbourne-based producer, vocalist and songwriter whose work weaves sound, story, and visuals into immersive, emotionally-charged experiences.
Born in London to Anglo-Indian parents, Vanessa’s heritage spans India, Portugal, England, Scotland, and Australia. Her musical roots trace back to her grandfather, a choirmaster in Madras, and her father, a renowned boy soprano. This lineage shapes her deep, intuitive connection to melody and vocal expression.
Her 2009 debut album Fernandez and Wright, Unsung, a jazz-blues collaboration with guitarist Steve Wright, received international acclaim, charting at #32 on the CMJ Jazz Music Charts (U.S.) and #42 on the Jazz Week World Charts.
In 2025, Vanessa released her debut solo album No Body, produced by Greg J Walker (Machine Translations). A richly textured, cinematic soul record, No Body blends moody beats, vintage inspired loops, and raw, intimate vocals into a sonic universe inspired by film, memory, and the surreal. The album was accompanied by a striking Escher-inspired lyric book designed by Vanessa, featuring symbolic iconography and immersive black-and-white visuals, establishing her as both a musical and visual storyteller.
Vanessa’s sound bridges the emotive intimacy of artists like Beth Gibbons and Nina Simone with the lush, cinematic production of Danger Mouse. Her work draws on soul, jazz, and trip-hop influences, yet remains deeply original.
She has collaborated with artists including Greg J Walker, Sam Teskey (The Teskey Brothers), Tamara Murphy, Stella Angelico, and Chelsea Wilson. Her performances span festivals such as St Kilda Festival, Blues Fest, and Stonnington Jazz Festival, and she has appeared alongside Fringe legends Moira Finucane, Yumi Umiumare, and Maude Davey.
Vanessa’s voice can be heard in the title track "All Of You" for the feature film Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears and in multiple songs for The Score (Amazon Prime, ABC). She also writes for stage including works for the Women of Soul album and Lady and the Whale, a theatrical children’s production by Finucane and Smith.
Vanessa is continually developing work, focused on cinematic productions that expand her creative universe. As a producer, she champions, emotional nuance and world-building as core to her process. Every song, every design, every note is an invitation into something deeper.
