Phil Slater is a trumpeter and composer living and working in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. He is the leader or co-leader of several projects including the Phil Slater Quartet, Band of Five Names, Daorum and the Sun Songbook.
He has performed and recorded as a featured soloist with a wide range of artists including the Australian Art Orchestra, Archie Roach, Missy Higgins, Lou Reed, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Paul Grabowsky, Andrea Keller, Genevieve Lacey, Sandy Evans, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Jonathan Zwartz, and others.
He has composed and performed original music for cinema, theatre and television projects including productions by the Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir Street Theatre, Bangarra, Legs on the Wall, and Force Majeure. He is the recipient of the National Jazz Award, the Freedman Fellowship, and is a three time winner of the Australian Jazz Bell Award.
His 2019 album "The Dark Pattern" was nominated for an ARIA Award, shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize and the APRA Art Music Award, and was voted 2019 Top 10 Jazz Releases by New York City Jazz Records magazine.
Slater's latest release, “Immersion Lure” in November of 2023, extends upon some of the musical ideas from “The Dark Pattern” and continues with his interest in combining the sound palette and texture of the jazz quintet instrumentation with minimalist compositional devices.
