Kate Lucas is an award-winning songwriter from Ballarat, Victoria, and is described as “one of the most innovative and noteworthy musicians in Australia." Working mostly under the project name Coda Chroma, Kate creates music that sways between cinematic folk and baroque pop, with otherworldly harmonies, honest and existential lyrics, suspended in deeply nuanced production.
Kate has released four studio albums, and her work was awarded an Australian Guild of Screen Composers Award and has received nominations for the Australian Music Prize and Music Victoria Awards.
Coda Chroma's 2024 album release LUMINOUS AS IT IS takes its name from a line in Mary Oliver's poem "Summer Morning" and is a snapshot in time of Kate's perpetual songwriting practice and her deep connection to nature. The album is steeped in themes of consumerism, environmentalism, friendship, and death, expressed through Coda Chroma's signature poetic, abstract lens.
"Like the spiral on a shell or tendrils on a feather, Coda Chroma's songs are so perfectly formed and so deeply rooted in nature that all you can do is let the beauty of them wash over you." - Kate Kingsmill, 3RRR FM (2024)
A companion piece to Coda Chroma's 2023 LP release Dreamself, LUMINOUS AS IT IS features nylon string guitars, vintage synths, and compelling vocal melodies. Although the songs move through a range of musical genres including jazz, pop, and psychedelia this album is undeniably the most folky Coda record so far.
Rated in Top 5 albums of 2024 on Melbourne's 3RRR FM, LUMINOUS AS IT IS has also been featured as album of the week and enjoyed heavy rotation across community and college radio in Australia and the U.S.
"The whole album is absolutely brilliant" - Jason Crane 106.1WCNR FM, Charlottesville Virginia (2024)
Coda Chroma (Kate Lucas) teamed up with Kiwi producer Damien Charles (William Crighton, Melody Pool) and musicians Nat Lewis (Ainslie Wills), Holly Thomas (Husky, Quivers), Isaac Barter (Didirri, Charm of Finches), to record LUMINOUS AS IT IS. The result is a deeply immersive listening experience, for music lovers who crave harmonic complexity, world-class production and authentic songwriting.
“Forest” is track two on the Luminous album and features a lo-fi 16mm music video created by Tasmanian-based filmmaker Ursula Woods. The song and the video transport listeners to a world of trippy green opulence with rhythmic acoustic guitar, samba-like percussion, guided by Kate’s playful lyrics and vocal style, framed in vintage aesthetic. Singable melodies are tinged with unsettling harmonic dissonance, set within a multi-dimensional production environment.
