Born in the UK Andy Ross lived in London for most of his life but now lives and works from his studio in Sydney Australia. Andy has over 40 years experience in the music industry an artist, writer and record producer with extensive experience on the road and in the studio working with legends such as Paul McCartney, Dave Gillmor, Tori Amos, Howard Jones, Propaganda and Robert Palmer to name a few. His work has spanned many mediums and genres and he has become a mentor to many fledgling artists helping them to home in on their uniqueness and develop an authentic voice
A few years back Andy embarked on his first solo album 'The Fear Engine'. It was to be a concept album unashamedly influenced by the 70's music of his teenage years. The concept was centered around the question “What is preventing us from achieving a more harmonious and trusting world?”.
During the making of the album Andy started asking people a sequence of 10 questions on this subject and filmed their answers. These questions were:
1. Why do people tell lies?
2. Why do people want to be famous?
3. Do you distrust anyone or anything?
4. Do people need each other to be happy?
5. When have you felt most alive?
6. What is an Artist?
7. Why do people fear failure?
8. Does the world need to be a better place?
9. How can we make the world a better place?
10. If you knew you couldn’t fail what would you do?
One thing led to another and before long he ended up making a documentary as well and ‘The Fear Engine’ project emerged.
The music on the album, ‘The Fear Engine’ encompasses elements of alt rock, cinematic, and pop music as each of the ten tracks is framed around a different question introduced by dialog aiming to illuminate The Fear Engine, an unconscious driving force within us. Recorded at his home studio in Sydney, Andy Ross plays all the instruments plus vocals on ‘The Fear Engine’ album (with the exception of saxophone, he left that task to John Helliwell of Supertramp). After all, his father was Ronnie Ross, a renowned British musician who not only played sax with many jazz legends (and played sax on Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” and The Beatles "Savoy Truffle") but who also taught the sax to a young David Bowie.
In the film, a cross section of people from artists (musician Howard Jones, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy, photographer Laura Solomon), scholars (professor Hugh Montgomery, philosopher Alastair Rylatt), innovators (founder ‘Choir With No Name’ Marie Benton, green builder Steve Epstein) to everyday people and children attempt to answer ten probing questions on the nature of human behavior, while an ordinary man in a suit and carrying a brief case with a silver ball representing his subconscious fears hovering around him (also on the album cover), walks from a city into the wilderness - a metaphor for the human desire for significance.
